Kristen Wiig Is Returning To Television To Star In Apple’s First Scripted Comedy

Apple‘s first scripted TV comedy has landed its lead star and she’s SNL royalty no less. (No, not Victoria Jackson. That’d be a trip, though.) The news also comes with further confirmation that Reese Witherspoon sees a lot of potential in the tech giant’s small screen strategy.

Kristen Wiig is making her return to television (non-guest star division) for a 10-episode comedy series shares The Hollywood Reporter. 30 Rock writer/producer Colleen McGuinness serves as the creator/showrunner of the project which is inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld’s upcoming short-story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It. Details beyond that are in short supply, but Witherspoon is serving as an executive producer with the project filmed under the banner of her production company Hello Sunshine.

Apple has vowed to put big money into original programming as they joust with Netflix and other titans in the market. Apple clearly believes in Witherspoon’s producing powers, because the untitled Wiig project is the third Witherspoon produced show nabbed by Apple. More than half Apple’s TV roster currently features Witherspoon as a producer. Also on the way is Witherspoon’s morning show drama with Jennifer Aniston and the Octavia Spencer starring drama Are You Sleeping? from Hello Sunshine. No one can accuse Apple of hurting for star power as they develop their TV identity.
