Looks Like Yet Another Comic Book Villain Is Coming To ‘Gotham,’ In The Form Of Azrael

We’re only a few episodes into Gotham season two, and the list of villains continues to grow. The newest addition is Azrael, a character who in the DC comics is an assassin who is created by the Order of St. Dumas to enforce “God’s will.” Gotham EP John Stephens spoke to ComicBook.com about what to expect and told the website that the Order of St. Dumas will be a continuing narrative throughout the season. He went on to say:

“We will be going deeper into the Order of St. Dumas over the next run of episodes, and it will continue to play an evolving role for the rest of the season…And yes, we wouldn’t be telling an Order of St. Dumas story without also intending to tell an Azrael story. Just keep watching.”

In the comics, Azrael is most widely known as Jean-Paul Valley, who took Batman’s mantle when the Dark Knight was dealing with the fallout of his back being broken by Bane. Despite being the most well-known, there were other iterations that the show could use, as well.

Gotham‘s villain population is going to outnumber the regular citizens pretty soon, and Bruce Wayne is still a good 10 years out from donning the signature cape and cowl to do something about it. Basically, Donal Logue isn’t the hero Gotham needs or deserves, but he’s the one they got.
