Beck Turned Down The Chance To Write The ‘Mad Men’ Theme Song

Beck sat down with Billboard magazine to talk his first new album in five years, Morning Phase, and managed to drop an interesting bit of information regarding his connection to AMC’s Mad Men. From Billboard:

“My instinct has definitely gone awry; I could give you many examples.” He laughs and tells me about how, several years ago, he turned down repeated requests to write the theme song for a new cable TV series. “It’s about ad executives in the ’60s? They’re going to make a show about that? Really? Um, I don’t think so,” he remembers saying. “Yeah, just like the best show ever made!”

What would Beck’s Mad Men theme had sounded like? Would it be better than the now iconic “A Beautiful Mine” by RJD2? I really couldn’t imagine another sound leading the charge for an episode, especially going into the last season. But I guess if someone was going to write a new song and get my interest, Beck would be the perfect artist to do that.

Him or Boz Scaggs. “Lowdown” is a funky tune and I think Don Draper’s numerous trysts could find it serving well as a theme song.
