Bill Maher Does The Unthinkable And Praises Donald Trump: ‘I Kinda Get Him’

For the second week, Bill Maher has gone out on a limb to throw some praise towards Donald Trump. Obviously there’s the factor that Trump is “interesting” and provides plenty of fodder for discussion on a television show, blog, newspaper, or at the breakfast table. But there’s also some sort of underlying feeling that Trump — despite his focus on ratings and attention — might actually be winning over a lot of voters in these very early days.

Maher cites the fact that Trump, the “New York guy,” is currently leading polls in Iowa. It’s something folks have been claiming Trump would falter at due to his outsider nature, but he seems to be thriving for some reason and Maher thinks he knows what it is:

“Even the Evangelicals want to be called on their sh*t. They are desperate to have somebody lead them, somebody say, ‘you know what, I just don’t bend to your bullsh*t.’ And Donald Trump, I gotta say, I don’t agree with him on a lot…but I kinda get him. We kinda been doing the same thing.”

Say what you will about Trump and his history of being a blowhard, the guy has kinda changed the entire election with his presence. As they describe in the clip, he essentially gives people the version of what they’ve been hearing for years and want to hear, but doesn’t fall into any political game outside of his own. And he’s raising interest just with his attendance to these events, raising the level of scrutiny on the entire affair.

Across the aisle, Maher and Talib Kweli battled for a bit over Bernie Sanders and the recent disruption by #BlackLivesMatter protestors in Seattle. Maher followed the obvious line of thought related to, “why Bernie?” But Kweli added some much needed understanding to the discussion about why he was singled out and why it matters to all the candidates and not just Sanders. Pretty good, quick segment.
