Bill Simmons And HBO Are Teaming Up For A New ‘Game of Thrones’ Aftershow

Can’t get enough Game of Thrones with just a weekly episode? Well there’s some great news coming your way, in the form of a brand new aftershow for the HBO hit series. The show, hosted by none other than Grantland alums and current Ringer staffers Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan, will be produced by Bill Simmons and air weekly on HBO and all of its digital platforms. As described by Deadline, the show will do the following:

…recap the latest episode, explaining the who, what, when and where; exploring the complicated politics and history of Thrones; and “offering absurd and not-so-absurd theories about future episodes.”

This has potential to be not only incredibly entertaining but also provide additional critical insight from the minds of Greenwald and Ryan, who were very funny together on their Grantland podcasts and continue to be so on The Ringer’s “The Watch” podcast. One could speculate that the show probably won’t be overly critical on Thrones developments and storytelling style from week to week due to the fact that both hosts are directly employed by the same channel that airs the show.

There may be some merit to that, but the potential alone in giving these two guys at least some free will to goof off and come up with crazy theories about the future of Jon Snow (who is definitely alive), Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark, and the rest is enough to give the show the benefit of the doubt. Both Greenwald and Ryan, as well as the rest of the team on the Ringer podcast circuit, have built up enough good will to get a chance like this and the opportunity to prove their analysis will be as unbiased as possible. And if it disappoints in that area, at least their wit and chemistry together will be a worthy enough reason to keep watching.
