When it comes to interesting career arcs, Bob Odenkirk has to be right up there as a fascinating success story. From his humble beginnings as a comedy writer on Saturday Night Live to the cult hit Mr. Show alongside David Cross, it seemed like Odenkirk was moving in the right direction. Then Odenkirk found himself on the treadmill that was being a background character or guest star on various television series before he landed a guest role on AMC’s Breaking Bad as sleazebag lawyer Saul Goodman. That role impressed so many that he became a series regular, which eventually led to Odenkirk getting his own spin-off show as Saul, Better Call Saul.
If that all sounds like it could make for a fascinating story, then you aren’t alone, as according to Variety, Bob Odenkirk is working on a memoir that will be released through Random House in the United States. The biography will follow Odenkirk’s career through the highs and lows, all with Odenkirk’s own, unique comedic voice guiding fans throughout his career in the form of a collection of personal essays. Odenkirk’s own description of the book is, well, very Odenkirk.
“A comic ‘bildungsroman,’ if you will – defined by Webster’s Dictionary as ‘a novel about the moral and psychological growth of the main character,’ – except, this will be more memoir and the main character, Bob Odenkirk (actor, writer, comedian, gadabout), doesn’t grow morally or psychologically.”
It’ll probably feature a story about a heroic overcoming of the odds, climbing mountains, and dealing with rejection, which just about anyone in the creative fields can understand.
