Fans Can Expect More Action From Brienne On The Upcoming Season Of ‘Game Of Thrones’

Season five of Game of Thrones had its issues, one of them being the sidelining of fan-favorite character Brienne of Tarth. While the knight does successfully take out Stannis Baratheon in the finale, she was unfortunately relegated to candle watching duty for most of the season. Gwendoline Christie recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly regarding Brienne’s lack of action last season, and how that will luckily become a thing of the past.

“After season 5, people would come up on the street moaning about why wasn’t Brienne wasn’t doing more. I’d say, ‘I’m terribly sorry, I’m not really in charge of that.’ I got the scripts for season 6 and I thought the story was so fantastic. It’s really exciting to see Brienne burst forth again.”

This is great news for everyone who is ready for more sword-wielding and wise-cracking with Podrick Payne in future episodes. Christie also praises the show runner’s for continuing to develop her unique character.

“Brienne is so unique and unconventional and so strong, and I love the writing hasn’t allowed her to just rest there,” Christie says. “[Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] are so terrific about how they develop characters. We see her develop like the way a human being might through life.”

Outside of her work on Game of Thrones, Christie appeared in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay and as Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and is lined up to co-star in the second season of Top of the Lake. Despite all of this success beyond Westeros, Christie is still content to stay in her armor.

“I really am in a position now where I’m very lucky to do other things,” she says, “But I don’t ever want to stop playing this part.”

Which probably means that she’ll be killed off this season, so start planning your candlelight vigils now.
