Chris Rock Is Definitely Hosting The Oscars This Year

After Neil Patrick Harris’ magic tricks earned a 16 percent drop in the ratings at the 2015 Oscars, it seems that the ceremony’s overlords have decided a dose of familiarity will do the show well with Chris Rock returning as host, as was previously speculated.

Rock will team up with producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin, according to Variety. Having already had the gig in 2005, Rock is familiar with what comes with the territory and audiences are obviously familiar with what he brings to the table — namely, laughs and the prospect that a few attendees and Hollywood sacred cows are going to have their ribs bruised with his barbs. Last year and past forays away from comedians (Hugh Jackman, James Franco, and Anne Hathaway) demonstrated that there is more required of an Oscar host than charm, and Rock has enough of an edge to keep the show from feeling too stale.

In response to the official selection, Rock said that he was, “glad to be hosting the Oscars” and that it’s “great to be back.” Producers Hill and Hudlin both seem enthused to be working with the star again.

“Chris Rock is truly the MVP of the entertainment industry,” said Hill and Hudlin.

“Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, documentarian — he’s done it all. He’s going to be a phenomenal Oscar host!”

With Rock in the hosting seat, maybe there will be more to talk about after the ceremony’s end besides selfies and snubs.
