Trying to explain the Dan Harmon vs. NBC situation to someone who has no idea what went down is very confusing. “So, like, this guy from The Sarah Silverman Program, who also wrote a song for the Oscars, had this show on NBC called Community, which NO ONE watched, at least compared to such smash hits as Rules of Engagement, yet was an online sensation on websites like Warming Glow. Haha, yeah, they do suck. Where was I? Oh yeah, Harmon and NBC kept arguing about ratings and creative control and yadda yadda yadda — what you don’t get that reference, either? Jesus — despite the fact that Community was one of the weirdest, most innovative shows in TV history and Harmon should have felt lucky to have gotten three seasons, let alone four episodes. Anyway, Harmon was fired a few months ago and wrote some very long Tumblr posts.”
It’s a story as old as time itself, really, and one with a happy ending: Adult Swim picked up Harmon’s new show.
We reported earlier this year that Dan Harmon created an Adult Swim pilot called Rick and Morty with his Channel 101 cohort Justin Roiland, but just this weekend, it was announced via Roiland’s Twitter that Adult Swim has ordered the show to series. Harmon and Dino Stamatopoulos’s production company, Starburns Industries, also confirmed the news via Twitter. The first season order is for ten half-hour episodes that are expected to air in 2014.
