With Bill Murray departing as principal in HBO’s Vice Principals, it’s easy to see where the series is going to go for its spark of conflict from this clip from HBO. In it, Danny McBride and Walton Goggins are set on one of them ascending to the next level of control in their high-school domain, only to have the rug pulled out from under them by a new arrival.
That would be Dr. Belinda Brown, the new principal brought in to take the empty spot and lead Goggins and McBride’s characters into the future. I don’t know exactly what to expect from this series given that it does not involve Kenny Powers or characters that live on the “other side of the tracks,” but Jody Hill and company haven’t led us astray yet. Also, having Walton Goggins along is a bonus.
What we’ve seen so far is a lot of table setting that you can only hope pays off once the show premieres this Sunday. If it doesn’t, we won’t have a lot of time to lament its shortcomings and then laud its return to form. Have to make it count.
