Really, it was only a matter of time before Doctor Who ran across a masked superhero. The Doctor and his companions live in a world of sentient plastic, time-traveling clockwork robots, and quantum-locked creepy angel statues. If anything, some dude in long johns flying around would probably be overly uninteresting to him. Unless, of course, there’s more to it than it seems.
This year’s Christmas Special — called The Return Of Doctor Mysterio— has an equally comic-booky villain: Brain-switching aliens. The Doctor is forced to team up with Lois L-ah, an investigative reporter and New York’s superhero The Ghost, which is a very Dickensian name for this kind of thing, to find the aliens and thwart their diabolical plot. But, of course, why there’s some dude flying around the Big Apple when, as a rule, the weirdness on Earth is generally confined to London and Cardiff will also be explored.
Really, though, there’s a missed opportunity. Imagine, if you will, the TARDIS hurtling through time and then Barry Allen runs past. After all, The Flash is already jumping around the timeline and even going into alternate universes. And screwing up time, to boot. You can’t tell us that wouldn’t capture the Doctor’s attention. But we’ll settle for the Ghost, as this special airs Christmas Day.
