Get Out Your Rupees, Netflix Is Making A Live-Action ‘Legend Of Zelda’ Television Series

It’s been the subject of jokes and parody, not to mention honest attempts, for nearly three decades now, but The Legend of Zelda hasn’t been anywhere close to screens. Until now. Netflix has announced they’re adapting the games to screens.

The Wall Street Journal broke the news. And yes, it’s going to be a live-action series:

The video streaming service is in the early stages of developing a live action series based on “Zelda,” about an ordinary boy named Link who must rescue a princess named Zelda and save a fantasy world called Hyrule, said a person familiar with the matter. As it seeks writers to work on the show, Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience, this person said.

It tells you how far Netflix has gotten that they can work with the infamously protective Nintendo. That said, the series is still in development, and deals like this can be fragile; Nintendo may walk away at some point. But either way, it’s a huge surprise and potentially an enormous coup for Netflix; Nintendo has been essentially uninterested in live-action since Super Mario Bros. came out and embarrassed everyone involved. We’ll have more as it develops.
