Hayley Atwell Had Hopes Marvel Could Keep ‘Agent Carter’ Alive While She Stars In ‘Conviction’

Hayley Atwell is Agent Carter. Well, she was Agent Carter. ABC’s MCU spin-off was a fun look at the 1940’s-era Marvel universe back when secret agents were more prevalent than a superhero in tights. Unfortunately, even with tie-ins to Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Atwell’s run under the red hat wasn’t meant to be. Low viewership and ABC’s pressure to get Atwell out of the Marvel Universe and into the courtroom in legal drama Conviction led to Agent Carter‘s dismissal from ABC’s lineup.

At one point, however, Atwell believed she could pull off double duty as a lawyer and a secret agent. Atwell recalled to TVLine that ABC was into both projects at one point.

“ABC said, ‘This is not us cancelling Agent Carter,’ this is us having a great new project and we really want you in the center of it.’”

Even though that turned out to not be the case, Atwell still has hopes to return to Agent Carter’s shoes:

“It’s still a much-loved show for the people involved in the making of it, and we know it has a special place in the fans’ hearts. And that’s something that I would be very happy to go back to, if the opportunity came” — in the form of a TV-movie or what have you.

The great thing about Peggy is we know she lives a long life,” Atwell reminds. “I’m banking on when I’m in my 50s, saying, ‘Let’s see what Peggy’s up in this decade!'”

Hopefully, Carter’s disappearance from network TV only ups her screen time when the situation allows. Red hat forever!
