The New HBO Programming Executive Doesn’t Think ‘True Detective’ Is Dead Yet

If you were like most and considered that after the mediocre second season that True Detective had ended with a whimper, then you may have been wrong. You see, time is a flat circle and while the Yellow King residing in Carcosa may have been exposed, non-linear existence means that nothing ever truly ends. True Detective may be proof of that. Most of us — including executives at HBO — considered the show dead-and-buried after the second season lacked the same magnetism of the first, but it may return for a third season.

According to Vulture, new HBO programming chief, Casey Bloys, isn’t ready to call it a day on True Detective just yet, although that doesn’t mean that a third season is even in production or has any direction, either. The quote comes from HBO’s Television Critics Association press day.

“It is not dead, but there’s no take on a third season yet.”

So for fans of Rust Cohle and southern gothic neo-noir detective thrillers, this is potentially good news. It’s not great news, by any stretch of the imagination, but it shows that the network understands just how great the show was and could be. The real question that fans have is if HBO would be able to somehow link up writer Nic Pizzolato with director Cary Fukunaga once again, because while the two had a volatile relationship, the show flourished under their direction. Securing Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson wouldn’t hurt, either.
