Every time someone asks, “Have you seen The Wire? You NEED to see The Wire,” David Simon gets another project on HBO. Since “the life of kings” came to an end, he’s gone from Generation Kill to Treme to the Oscar Isaac-starring Show Me a Hero, and now, he’s added two more… a political drama about Capitol Hill, and also something about porn with James Franco.
The first, a 1970s/’80s porn drama titled The Deuce, has snagged boldface names James Franco and Breaking Bad’s Michelle MacLaren as the potential series’ star and director, respectively. The second, a political drama that’s still untitled, is set in the present-day world of Capitol Hill and will provide a detailed examination of partisanship and the influence of money on national governance. The Deuce concerns the legalization of the porn industry, and the rise of HIV, in New York City between the early 1970s and mid-1980s. Franco will play twin brothers — yes, both of them — “who were players in the Times Square world and became fronts for Mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry from its origins.” Less is known about the Capitol Hill pilot, which Simon co-wrote with Carl Bernstein, but it probably doesn’t involve James Franco as porn kingpin twins.
