Joan Rivers joined her daughter on The Today Show this past Tuesday and managed to create a bit of backlash via a harmless joke about the Cleveland kidnappings. So in typical fashion, the outraged citizens of the nation and gatekeepers of good taste in the media want her to apologize. Luckily she’s refusing to apologize and there’s really no good reason why she should. From CBS:

“I’m a comedienne,” she told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I know what those girls went through. It was a little, stupid joke. There is nothing to apologize for. I made a joke. That’s what I do. Calm down. Calm f—— down. I’m a comedienne. They’re free, so let’s move on.”

I hate when we parade people out to apologize to the common man, like we’re going to feel better when they say they are sorry. If the girls who got kidnapped want an apology from Joan Rivers, that I can get behind that. But when some jackhole writing from E! brings up the notion, I really want to see a semi-truck plow through their office like something out of Terminator 2.

If you’re offended by something, I always sort of feel like that’s your problem. It doesn’t make the issue disappear from existence, but I guess you’ll feel better about yourself if there’s an apology stinking up the room.

And that’s not to say that the main idea is to offend your audience, but it is an impossible problem when it occurs as a by-product. There’s always going to be someone who is offended by your shtick. Joan Rivers is old enough to have experienced that numerous times and she handled this beautifully.

The actual joke is embedded below and you can always throw your opinion out there in the comments. Did she go too far? Did she not go far enough? Did Al Roker hurt himself reaching for a cupcake while driving to work? Let me know.
