Jon Hamm Always Makes ‘SNL’ Better

Here’s my favorite sketch from this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” which was better than normal thanks to host Jon Hamm. The skit is called “I Didn’t Ask For This,” a TV show where the victims of viral videos get a sympathetic platform to discuss their grief and embarrassment. It manages to go on for five minutes without feeling like it’s going forever, and Hamm does an excellent impression of the Best Cry Ever Guy.

Other notes from the show, with related videos below the cut:

  • I’m not a fan of the Shy Ronnie character in the digital shorts, yet I love Rihanna’s part. I would have preferred an entire song to her wanting to do Jon Hamm.
  • Gay jokes: I like Fred Armisen’s Liberace in the Vincent Price sketch, but when a gay kiss is the punchline for an entire skit — as it was in “Highway Cops” — I find it lazy and insulting. To gays AND my comedic sensibility.
  • Even though the Back to the Future outtakes were just an excuse to use outdated impressions, I still found them funny. What can I say, I like a good Alan Alda impression.
