‘Krypton’ Casts Its First Lead, So Superman’s Grandpa Really Is Getting A Show

Krypton is a bizarre premise even by the standards of DC’s television arm, and keep in mind these are the people who approved Gotham. It follows Seg-El, Superman’s grandpa and a character who barely even exists in the comics, as he tries to redeem the House of El after an unnamed disaster. And it should tell you just how important the show’s romantic hook, namely Seg-El in love with a scion of the House of Zod, is that she was the first character cast.

Georgina Campbell is a British actress who can be seen in the upcoming season of Broadchurch. She also won a BAFTA for Murdered By My Boyfriend, which is quite a good thriller to track down despite sounding like a Lifetime Original Movie, and has SF experience with the show Tripped, about alternate universes and the slackers who explore them. On Krypton, she’ll be playing Lyta Zod, the ambitious daughter of a general and the clandestine love of Seg-El.

It’s pretty neat casting, but by the same token, it’s kind of up in the air how a show like this will even work. Granted, SyFy has found a lot of success with shows conventional TV wisdom doesn’t expect to work anymore, but will their version of Gotham really click? We’ll learn one way or the other as the pilot gets closer to shooting.
