Let The ‘Stephen Colbert For Senate’ Rumors Begin

Stephen Colbert has accomplished at a lot in his life. He’s gone from Second City standout to Exit 57/Strangers with Candy creator and actor to The Daily Show correspondent, and now hosts his own show, The Colbert Report. Plus, he was in The Love Guru, which is about five years away from so-ironic-it’s-sincere cult success. But there’s one thing Colbert hasn’t done: become the next Fred Thompson. It’s the childhood dream of men and women everywhere, but there’s a rumor Colbert may at last try to match the Die Hard 2 actor.

A new Twitter account — @ColbertforSC — was launched after GOP Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina announced he will resign to become president of the Heritage Foundation. A spokeswoman for Colbert did not directly say whether the comedian and political satirist is running the account.

“Stephen is honored by the groundswell of support from the Palmetto State and looks forward to Governor Haley’s call,” Carrie Byalick, a Colbert spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. (Via)

If a vague, intentionally misleading response from a spokesperson to a query about a professional comedian, who got his big break on a show with the Grumpy Old Man and once deepthroated a banana, running for Senate in a state best known for not being North Carolina doesn’t mean that he’s running for office, based solely on information received from an unverified Twitter account and a near-blank website, then I don’t know what to believe in anymore. Except that if Colbert becomes a Senator, that means no Love Guru 2. DON’T DO IT.
