It was only in April that Lilly Wachowski accepted a GLAAD Award and delivered an extremely memorable speech for her role as creator of the cutting edge Netflix sci-fi series Sense8. Although the show has been picked up by the streaming service for a second season, it was announced today that Lilly Wachowski will be stepping away from the program and leaving the show in her sister Lana’s hands. This will be the first time ever that only one Wachowski will be working on a project.

According to BuzzfeedLilly “is using this time to focus on her well-being, but she could return should Netflix order a third season.” This year has not been kind for the younger Wachowski sibling. In March, she involuntarily came out as transgender after the UK media outlet The Daily Mail threatened to release an article about Lilly’s status before she could make an official statement about the transition. Lilly then made the announcement about her transition in the Windy City News.

Lana has a lot of work ahead of her, but the cast of Sense8 are confident in the prolific director’s abilities. Jamie Clayton who stars as Nomi Marks told Buzzfeed, “Lana is absolutely a superwoman. The way she channels her energy and her creativity … it keeps me in absolute awe whenever I’m in her presence. She’s an absolute force.”

Lilly’s departure isn’t the only one for the series. Aml Ameen (Capheus) was recast because of creative disagreements the actor had with Lana. Capheus will be played by newcomer Toby Onwumere.
