Lizzy Caplan Named Her Cat After Stephen Colbert Long Before He Had His Own Show

From a species of wasp that mummifies its prey to a treadmill on board the International Space StationLate Show host Stephen Colbert’s name has been borrowed by attention-savvy scientists and voting members of the public to honor the comedian. These and similar accolades were given to the cable TV personality when his popular Colbert Report ran on Comedy Central. Yet as Now You See Me 2′s Lizzy Caplan revealed on Thursday, she beat everyone to the punch when she named her cat “Colbert” after the young Daily Show correspondent 13 years ago.

Yes, Colbert is Caplan’s 13-year-old cat, and his introduction to his namesake and everyone watching The Late Show was via an image of him awash in $100 bills.

“I heard about this earlier today,” the human Colbert joked. “I thought people were just BS-ing me, but then I got this photo of your cat playing with dolla dolla bills, y’all.”

“Yeah,” admitted Caplan. “Those are $100 bills, too. He’s quite wealthy.”

There’s a lot to unpack here in terms of the money. We could either spend all our time fussing over human Colbert’s use of the phrase “dolla dolla bills, y’all,” or we could wonder about why Caplan decided to bury her otherwise beloved feline in cold, hard cash. Yet the first possibility seems unnecessary, and the second just goes without saying. All cats — especially fat cats named Colbert — should be able to swim in a sea of money, right?
