Lottery Winners Vs. Harry Potter: John Oliver Explains Scottish Independence As Only He Can

The people of Scotland will vote later this week to decide if they want to remain a part of the United Kingdom or become their own, sovereign nation. As John Oliver noted in this Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, that’s not exactly as exciting as the plot of Braveheart. But there is quite a bit to unpack, and Oliver did that as only he can. For example, did you know that the major financial backer for the campaign to keep the countries together is Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, and the major financial backer for the pro-independence group is literally just two Scottish people who won the lottery? How great is that?

I’ll answer that question for you: Not as great as the fact that Scotland’s real, actual national animal is the unicorn. Because that’s something else Oliver teaches us in the clip. We are learning so much today.

There are other, more serious issues discussed in the clip, obviously. Some of them involve nuclear weapons. Others involve the ending of Love, Actually. But I’ll leave those to John Oliver. I’m just gonna stay over here in my wheelhouse: unicorns and lottery winners.
