In the wake of the juggernaut success of Netflix’s Making a Murderer, people have Very Important Opinions on whether or not subject Steven Avery actually did the crime he’s sitting in jail for. But regardless of which side of the coin you fall on when it comes to Avery’s presumed innocence or lack thereof, it’s hard to make the argument that the police investigation into Teresa Halbach’s murder and subsequent trial wasn’t an unmitigated disaster.

You know, just going about their usual business of terrorizing innocent citizens, blackmailing, and evidence planting — pretty much par for the course if you’ve watched the documentary series.
