Marge Simpson is no one’s favorite Simpsons character when they are a kid. She’s too fussy, too lame (even if she has a way cool apron), too much of a mom. But when you get older, and adulthood smacks you around a bit, you realize Marge is what keeps the Simpsons family together, and she’s way depressing. But there’s something about her sadness — whether she’s giving Homer yet another opportunity, feeling disappointed in her son for stealing a video game, or drinking a glass of wine every day — that’s essential and relatable.
Marge is now one of my favorites, and I would happily wear her smooshed shirt with BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg. He recently (the tweets are from last month, but they went under the radar until now) began a reflective 15-tweet storm with a simple question, “Does Marge have friends?” Well, there’s Ruth Powers, who went on a joyride with Marge (or maybe it was another blue-haired freak) in season five’s “Marge on the Lam,” but we barely see her again until season 14. So… no? I feel terrible for Marge already.
The answer to all his questions? Oh, let’s say… Moe. (Also, I’d really like Bob-Waksberg to write The Simpsons series finale, assuming there ever is one.)
