That Fake Low-Budget Slasher Film From ‘Mr. Robot’ Is Now Available Online

The second season of the excellent USA series Mr. Robot is almost half done, and I’m pleased to report that it’s just as good if not better than the first. It seemed clear that the show was written in such a way as to give the viewers a somewhat definite ending, so where exactly would it go after it became the surprise cult hit of last summer? It turns out showrunner Sam Esmail had no lack of ideas.

There’s more hacking, more rants on the state of the world and the economy, and a lot more references to many favorite subversive films from the past. One of the latest episodes, eps2.3_logic-b0mb.hc (all episode titles are a combination of pirate filename structures and hacker script references), included a fake Halloween style slasher film called Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie that Elliot and Darlene watch during a flashback scene before everything hit the fan in season one.

I suppose fake isn’t the right word, because now the movie kinda exists. Esmail is known for his obsessive attention to detail and composition in every shot, and that extends apparently to shots within shots. There’s now a 9-minute version of the movie on the Mr. Robot website, and it follows the careful massacre of several rich kid brats as a man in a mask — the same Guy Fawkes style mask F Society uses — hacks them up with a variety of handheld tools.

It’s just another great little Easter egg for a show chock full with that kind of thing.
