MTV’s rebrand of their golden popcorn awards continued in a big way on Thursday when the Teen Wolf farm revealed their nominees and how they’re divided. So long, musty gender rules! *kicks old designation down a flight of stairs*
The rechristened MTV Movie & TV Awards has removed gender restrictions and revamped their category field with a dash more political flavor for the cable shindig. Jordan Peele’s horror miracle Get Out leads 2017’s slate of nominees with six nods, Stranger Things and Beauty and the Beast trail in second place with four noms apiece.
Newly installed categories like Best American Story and Best Fight Against The System suggest a less silly brand of MTV award show and another shift away from the MTV Movie Awards doing a gleefully ironic anti-Oscars thing. In this updated category roster, Best Fight Against The System is essentially a substitute for the now defunct Best Fight prize. There will still be silly, goofy, frivolous promotional stuff (there’s a reason Adam DeVine is hosting this show and not Angela Merkel), but this appears to be MTV leaning harder into promoting and presenting a progressive identity.
