There’s No Guarantee That ‘Iron Fist’ Will Make It To Netflix In 2017

Netflix has seen a lot of success with Marvel series. So much so that Daredevil has a second season coming, Jessica Jones just got renewed, the Punisher is on the way, and Luke Cage arrives at some point this year. Unfortunately, this has all led to something of a Marvel traffic jam, and Iron Fist may be on hold until 2017 as a result.

At the Television Critics’ Association press tour, two major points about Marvel came up. One is that Netflix, despite having a lot of series in the works, is limiting Marvel to two shows a year, considering it has no shortage of original programming:

…these are produced on a scale of a major film. So there are long production times and long post times. And in some cases we have character crossovers, which makes it a little difficult to manage production. It’s not the goal to put out more than one or two a year.

That pretty much rules out anything that’s not Luke Cage for 2016. So, what about 2017? It appears that Marvel isn’t sure whether it wants another season of Jessica Jones, The Defenders, or Iron Fist, not to mention that the Punisher may be waiting in the wings to swoop in guns blazing.

The good news is that the show is currently looking for a cast, so it’s in the running for 2017. But if you were hoping to see Danny Rand punch a dragon in the heart to gain its powers, you’ll have to wait for a while.
