One of the nice things about Netflix is that it’s hard to miss moments in TV and movies when you’re streaming. Get distracted for a few seconds? You can always rewind and watch it again. Unless it’s part of a end-of-month purge, all that sweet content is there for the rewatching if you need to see it again.
And the streaming giant appears to be doubling down on that perk with some new technology. Netflix is toying with some new features this year, and the latest is an on-screen prompt to re-watch a certain part of a TV show or movie. It’s not an option for the entirety of its massive library of TV and movies,
The Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday that Netflix is testing a new feature that will give viewers a chance to rewatch something interesting, or maybe just something relevant to the plot that they might have skimmed over.
“We’re trying out a feature which gives Netflix members the ability to rewatch favorite scenes and memorable moments with the click of a button,” said a Netflix spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times. “Right now we’re just looking to learn from it and may or may not roll it out more broadly in the future.”
One example of Netflix using this technology is in their original movie Dumplin. Miss that important dance routine in the middle of the movie? There’s an on-screen button you can trigger with your remote to watch it again. According to the Times, there isn’t a list of exactly what is being dolled up with this feature, but it is something unique.
Most digital streaming devices already allow consumers to rewind and fast-forward. Netflix’s new feature offers a more sophisticated version of that functionality by replaying whole scenes or sequences with one click or tap.
Netflix declined to provide more details on the duration of the test or the kind of feedback it was receiving.
Not everyone seems thrilled by the additional on-screen info that Netflix is giving you, but it’s a completely optional thing Netflix has added.
