Nick Offerman Recalls His Lowest Moment As An Actor: Auditioning For A Budweiser Commercial

Before we talk about the time the great Nick Offerman, who appeared on The Daily Show last night to hawk his new book, Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living, competed against Ogre from the Revenge of the Nerds for a Budweiser commercial, let me first mention that on The Daily Show‘s website, the clip below is tagged with: “Nick Offerman…the Midwest…labor…blue collar.” Yeah, they get it.

But back to Ogre: before Offerman became the Ron Swanson we all know and love today, he was just another Joe Makes-His-Own-Furniturepack who wanted to act for a living. During one dry spell, he went to an audition for a Budweiser commercial, where he saw, yes, Ogre, a personal hero of his, but also Carmine from Laverne & Shirley.

These days, Offerman only shills for the finest spirits — no more Bud for him. Meanwhile, if you listen close enough, some say you can still hear Ogre howling “NEEERRRRRRDDDDDSSSSS” at that dork, the moon.
