10 Open Questions After ‘The Walking Dead’ Mid-Season Finale

Now that we’ve sufficiently processed “Too Far Gone,” the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead, it’s time to turn toward the second half of season four, which will premiere on February 9, 2014. There are quite a few threads still lingering, and several questions left unanswered. Let’s take a look at the biggest questions going into the second half.

1. Is Judith Dead? Neither Kirkman nor Gimple will say, though they both leave open the possibility that she is alive. According to Robert Kirkman, from TV Guide:

Maybe she’s dead, but if she’s alive, that changes the story in some interesting ways moving forward as we go into some of the other stories from the comics that happened after the prison where Judith wasn’t present. It’s fun to think about how she could potentially change those stories if she is alive. She certainly could be dead. There’s a lot of blood in that car seat.

Someone over on Reddit suggested that, from the way Tyreese is running in the GIF below (as though he’s holding something), that he may have Judith.

2. Will we find out more about who was feeding the rats to the zombie and, therefore, the person likely responsible for burning Karen (Tyreese’s girlfriend)? Yes. According to Gimple:

We will absolutely find out more about the rats and the person who seemed to dissect that rabbit that Tyreese found in the tombs before the Governor showed up.

It is likely that Tyreese will find out first hand, since he has been separated from the group with Lizzie, the most likely suspect.

3. Will we see Carol again? Yes. According to Scott Gimple, she will reappear, but it may be a long while (but it probably won’t be a long while). From THR:

“She’s going to appear sooner or later, but I can’t say much. There is a bit of time from when we saw Merle (Michael Rooker) on the roof in Atlanta and when he rejoined the story. It could be a bit but could be a long bit, but she will return at some point. We might have flying cars at that point, but she will return.

Recall, however, that Rick never got the chance to tell Tyreese that Carol was allegedly behind the death of Karen, so it might make sense narratively for Carol, Tyreese, Lizzie and Mika to regroup together, and for Tyreese to learn who killed Karen in that setting.

4. We’re quite used to time jumps in between seasons (or mid-seasons). Will there be a time jump when the show returns in February? No. Not much, according to Gimple.

5. With the prison gone, where will the series relocate? Neither Kirkman nor Gimple will say, except that the mid-season premiere — written by Kirkman — hews closely to the comics, and comic readers will recognize a lot of stuff.

6. When Will Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Rosita (Christian Serratos) and Eugene (Josh McDermitt) be introduced? — Soon, perhaps in the mid-season premiere. In the comics, Abraham was introduced right after the fall of the prison, and — since the mid-season premiere will follow the comics closely — it is safe to assume he’ll be introduced in the first or second episode back. However, the cabin with the dead military members described as rapists and murderers from two episodes ago — which is associated with Abraham’s story in the comics — will not return, according to Gimple.

7. Will the second half of season four be slower, like the first half, or faster paced, like season three? Kind of both, according to Gimple.

The back half of the season has a wildly different structure to it. It’s a very different set of stories, and it’s very unlike the first half of the season. I can’t say without giving stuff up, but it’s very different. The same story priorities apply; there’s a lot of character exploration but in a very different way. In some ways, the story moves quicker but in a really different manner.

8. Daryl and Beth are separated together. Will there be a romance between the two? She’s 18. He’s close to 40. That’s absurd. But Sasha and Bob are also separated together, so that’s a possibility.

9. What happened to Sam? — Remember the guy from “Indifference,” the episode when Carol left? He had a girlfriend, Ana, who was killed, but Sam’s whereabout at the end of the episode were unknown. I still have no idea what happened to him, but based on this statement from Kirkman, I think he may return:

If you go back and watch the first eight episodes of the season, there are still a lot of lingering thoughts that are still dangling out there that we will definitely be picking up in the back half.

Another thing from the first half of the season that they may return to is the voice that Daryl, Michonne, Tyreese and Bob heard on the radio while they were traveling to get the meds, and perhaps searching the source of that out.

10. Will Chandler Riggs’ (Carl Grimes) acting ability improve? No. Absolutely not. I mean, just listen to him yell, “Wake up! Wake up!” in the trailer for the mid-season premiere.
