As fans prepare for the return of Game of Thrones in the near future (what will come first, next season or George R.R. Martin’s next book?), Vanity Fair reports that a new character has just been added to the cast: He’s a ruthless pirate “who’s terrorized the entire world” and he’ll be played by Pilou Asbæk, a European actor that might soon be making waves all around the world.

Asbæk, who starred in Borgen with Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, the actress who played the Wildling chieftain last season, has also appeared on The Borgias, and will soon be coming to a wide American audience in Ben-Hur. And he’s got to have some pretty amazing acting abilities, considering that the role of Theon and Yara’s uncle is going to be pretty complex.

Here’s a character description, via Variety:

Euron Greyjoy is the uncle of Theon (Alfie Allen) and Yara (Gemma Whelan) and the younger brother of Balon Greyjoy (Patrick Malahide), Lord of the Iron Islands. In George R. R. Martin’s novels, Euron is a skilled warrior who captains a ship called the Silence, and is known for his tempestuous and unpredictable moods. If season six of “Thrones” follows the Greyjoy storyline from Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels, Asbæk’s Euron is likely to play a pivotal role in the series going forward.

Asbæk won’t be the only new face. He’s adding his name to a roster that already includes Ian McShane and Max Von Sydow.
