Rainn Wilson is back on network TV as Backstrom, the “overweight, offensive, irascible” Portland detective. As Jason perfectly put it, he’s like a master detective version of House played by Dwight from The Office. All of this means he’s currently doing promotion, which means late night appearances, which means an open mic.
That’s how he seems to treat this appearance on Conan, taking some time to talk a bit about “hipster foodies” who love taking their love of gastronomy to annoying levels. Of course it’s all one big comedy bit (or it seems like one), covering the fall of Rome, the existence of octopus pastrami, and Wilson’s own role as a foodie.
