Rami Malek’s Mom Is Totally Fine With Him Losing The Golden Globe To Jon Hamm

Certain Mr. Robot fans were disgruntled on Sunday when Jon Hamm won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama over Robot‘s breakout star Rami Malek. Malek’s own mother was not among them. In his first appearance on Ellen this morning, Malek explained that the woman who bore him and raised him was completely fine with the fact that Golden Globes glory was yanked from his youthful, sweaty grasp by Hamm. In fact, she was more excited to be in the same building as Hamm than she was to be present for her own son’s Globes debut.

After Malek explained to DeGeneres that he took his mother — a woman he ostensibly once loved and trusted — as his date to the Globes, DeGeneres seemed touched, replying, “Your mom must have been proud.” She was really proud,” Malek allowed. “She’s my backbone.” But beneath Mrs. Malek’s surface-level motherly love was a darker, more urgent desire: “All she wanted to do was meet Jon Hamm,” said Malek. “I was like, ‘Okay, Mom, you can meet Jon Hamm. Hold on, I gotta do some interviews.’ And she was like, ‘I need to meet Jon Hamm now.’ ”

So, blinded by her Draper-lust was Malek’s mother that when Malek lost the Golden Globe, she exclaimed that the right man had been awarded the prize. “[Hamm’s] name got called, and he won, and she was like, ‘He deserved it,’ ” laughed Malek. Realizing how tragic the entire story was, Malek quickly added, “She loves me to death. I think she was protecting me, to an extent.” Yes, Rami. She was protecting you from glimpsing the dark heart of her mad, unrelenting passion.

In an interview with E! on Sunday, Hamm appeared to disagreed with Malek’s mother, feeling vaguely guilty about beating the young up-and-comer. “I thought, ‘Well, it’s the new guy’s year and that’ll be great.’ And then they said the old guy and I thought, ‘Oh, sh*t. This is going to be bad.’ ” Don’t worry, Jon. You’ll always have Mrs. Malek.
