We’ve seen a slew of hosts take a “last call” with Kate McKinnon over the past few seasons of SNL. Larry David, John Goodman, and Louis C.K. all went at it opposite a very strong McKinnon in the modern version of the “Hot Tub Love-Ahs” sketch. Dave Chappelle got his chance last night and did not disapppoint, looking ridiculous and going the distance with McKinnon, to the point that Kenan Thompson almost lost it by the end of the sketch.
From the awful wig to the bag of undies, Chappelle was a match for McKinnon’s lovable weirdo and her shirt that was sabotaged by “a rival.” If you go through life without having a chance to consider someone your rival and call them that in conversation, you’re just not living. At least start something with your postal worker.
And as for Kenan, this is definitely his time to shine for the night. Typically he’s brought in a bit earlier to pump up the show it seems, but SNL did not need that last night. Here we get to see the whole “Kenan Reacts” method in action, especially when he’s apparently pouring bleach in his eyes. I’ll gladly take this over half of what we might see when Kristen Wiig hosts next week. That almost ensures Gilly and it’s always a bit too soon for that — at least for me.
