‘SNL’ Brilliantly Skewers What The Apathetic Dude Population Would Be Up To In ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Who says dystopian misery can’t be funny, right? Saturday Night Live sent up Hulu’s critically splooshed over new series The Handmaid’s Tale on last night’s Chris Pine hosted episode with a brilliant observation on where all the apathetic bros are at in this bleak future.

“In the not-too-distant future, the world is a dystopia,” explains the narration. “Women are enslaved. We have no rights and no freedoms, forced by an oppressive government to bear children under penalty of death.”

And where are the duuuuuudes in this equation? Still dudin’ it up, dude. As Cecily Strong, Sasheer Zamata, Vanessa Bayer and Aidy Bryant are trying to keep a low profile, a brigade of bros are mystified by what happened to their “Girl Squad.”

“You missed my Cinco de Mayo half birthday!” exclaims Pine’s clueless dude. “What’d you do, flake or what?”

It becomes pretty clear that this gaggle of men hasn’t caught on to the whole enslavement + oppressive government + forced breeding thing that’s gone down. They had the best of intentions, though.

“I heard a little something about that,” says Alex Moffat. “I didn’t know if it was like for sure happening. Is there a protest or something?”

It’s funny, smart and chilling all in one handy video sketch portion. Come for them yuks, stay for a nervous bit of collar tugging about our future.
