‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Is Getting A Prequel Series (In Comic Book Form)

After basic cable’s Game of Thrones, The Bastard Executioner, was canceled after 10 disappointing episodes, Kurt Sutter went back to his bread and butter: motorcycle men, and the women who love them. He told the Hollywood Reporter that FX is “really hot on the Mayan thing,” a reference to his Sons of Anarchy spin-off, Mayans MC, which went into script development this month. (Don’t worry, Sutter said, “there are no horses involved.”) The series, described as a “dark, visceral family drama… through a Latino lens,” was co-written by Elgin James and follows SAMCRO’s bike rivals, the Mayans. It’s not the only Sons of Anarchy-related project Sutter’s working on:

Sons of Anarchy will return in Sons of Anarchy Redwood Original, an all-new comic book prequel to the television series overseen by series creator Kurt Sutter. Redwood Original, which is written by Ollie Masters (DC’s The Kitchen, Boom! Studios’ Snow Blind) with input from Sutter, follows an 18-year-old Jax as he leaves high school still trying to come to terms with his dead father’s legacy and the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club as a whole. Masters told the Hollywood Reporter that Redwood Original “is a story about [Jax] proving himself — to the club, to their enemies and allies, and to himself. In [the TV series], the shadow of his father looms large over him and it does in our series, as well, but for us it’s recent history, so it’s more of an open wound than a scar being pulled open.” All your favorite characters are returning: Jax, Opie, Clay, hopefully Venus Van Dam (just imagine how big her breasts are going to be in comic book form). And also Gemma, although she’s no one’s favorite. The first issue, with artwork by Luca Pizzari, comes out August 3.
