‘South Park’ Is Rebooting The National Anthem In Season 20

Trey Parker and Matt Stone aren’t interested in “the giant douche and the turd sandwich” running for president, but don’t expect this season of South Park — the show’s 20th! — to be completely devoid of politics. This Wednesday’s season premiere will follow tanned Trump stand-in, Mr. Garrison, as he continues his quest to become POTUS, with world’s worst chauffeur Caitlyn Jenner at his side. Also, in a nod to the Colin Kaepernick controversy: “The National Anthem gets a reboot by an American Icon.” That’s all Comedy Central will spoil about the episode, other than it’s called “Member Berries.”

What does “Member Berries” mean? Who is the “American Icon”? The most obvious answer is self-professed icon Mr. Garrison, especially after his patriotic ballad “Where Has My Country Gone?” last season, but that seems too easy. Lorde isn’t American; neither is the Cure’s Robert Smith. Hm, let’s just say it’s Taylor Swift — she’s in the news! — and happily be proven wrong.

(It’s probably Randy. God, I hope it’s Randy.)

Black Lives Matter will also factor into this season, as Cartman can be seen wearing a “Token’s Life Matters” shirt on Comedy Central’s website. Please don’t go away for nine months ever again, South Park. We didn’t even get a Martin Shkreli episode! That would have been very satisfying.
