This Major ‘The Walking Dead’ Character Was Supposed To Die In Season 3

Greg Nicotero and the writers and creators of The Walking Dead probably go through several iterations of their narrative before finally settling on the one viewers are shown, so there’s a good chance that just about every character in the massive AMC show has been killed off on paper. Hence why, in a new interview with SFX Magazine, Nicotero briefed The Walking Dead fans about a possibility that almost became canon:

Not a lot of people know that when we were shooting season three, in the episode where T-Dog died, there was a moment where Carol was going to die in lieu of T-Dog’s character. At that point there was some concern in the writers’ room that they didn’t know where to take her character. So the fact that [showrunner] Scott Gimple and the writers have been able to craft this amazing journey for her just goes to show that there is a tremendous amount of story to tell for a lot of these characters.

That’s right: T-Dog almost got to live. The decision to stay with Carol has been a fruitful one — the hard-nosed femme fatale helped destroy the Wolves when they attacked in season six. She also freed the group from the clutches of evil cannibals. Still, we should all hold a moment of silence for T-Dogg. You had the best name, bro.

The Walking Dead creeps back into our living rooms on Feb. 14.
