The Breaks, a hip-hop drama on the rise of rap which VH1 debuted back in January 2016, is now on its way to becoming a television series, according to Billboard.
Based on the best-selling book The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, the TV movie chronicled the lives of three hip-hop loving friends as they attempt to make their way into the music industry. The film was courting a lot of hype, but even the highest of expectations couldn’t have predicted how well it actually did.
The Breaks currently ranks as the No. 2 cable original movie of the year among adults 18-49, 18-34 and women in both demographics, and the film’s premiere (as well as its encore) collected a combined 2.6 million total viewers, leading VH1 to a 42 percent gain among adults under 50 in January.
Although it’s still unknown how many episodes will be ordered, most of the cast from the movie is expected to return, including Wood Harris, Mack Wilds, Afton Williamson, David Call, Antoine Harris and Method Man.
