The biggest question to come out of The Walking Dead‘s season seven midseason finale — other than, “Why did it take so long for someone to finally kill Spencer?” — is who was spying on Rick and Aaron while they were taking supplies from a houseboat, and again in a post-credits scene outside Alexandria? Was it a new character, or, as our own Dustin Rowles offered, “a callback to an existing character, [maybe] someone from Oceanside, most likely Cyndie”? We won’t know the boot-wearer’s identity until the zombie series returns in Feb. 2017, but that hasn’t stopped viewers from guessing.
The most popular theory is that it’s Dwight, the most tragically sympathetic Savior, now that Fat Joey is dead. That’s not to say he isn’t an evil dude — he is, for making Daryl eat dog food sandwiches and listening to that same damn song on repeat — but Negan has put Dwight through physiological and physical torture, including marrying Dwight’s wife and ironing his face. It’s not unreasonable for Dwight to want to escape (again) and help Rick & Co. take out Negan for good — that’s what happens in the comics, at least (spoilers).
The contents of his room further point to Dwight.
First, there’s the binoculars hanging by the door [when Daryl breaks into Dwight’s room as he’s escaping]. Sure, anyone could have binoculars, but that’s not all. On the chair, just in front of the camera, a black hoodie is folded on top of the rest of the clothes. The watcher was wearing a dark hoodie, and using binoculars. Throughout the series, a hoodie has never been part of Dwight’s wardrobe. It’s reasonable to think the guy has other clothes, but it raises eyebrows when combined with everything else. (Via)
Creator Robert Kirkman was asked about the spy during Sunday’s post-finale Talking Dead. “I really wish I could tell you,” he said. “All I can say is, those boots, you definitely recognize those from earlier, they’re connected to that boat scene. That’s a big part of what we’re dealing with when we come back next half of the season. So we’ll be, ya know, revealing that soon.” That could point to Dwight switching sides, and fighting back against Negan with Rick (although then Kirkman’s “boat scene” connection is out of nowhere). Or maybe it’s a yet-to-be-introduced Whisperer, which would explain why we only see boots — the zombie-flesh mask would be a dead (sorry) giveaway.
I hope it’s T-Dog’s ghost. It wouldn’t make any sense, but I miss that guy.
