What’s on Tonight: Battle For Marjah

The Battle for Marjah (HBO) — The American premiere of a documentary made by British journalist Ben Anderson, who was embedded with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines last year during a major offensive through a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan (it previously aired in the U.K. under the title Bravo’s Deadly Mission). From everything I’ve read, this looks like an excellent addition to the canon of modern war documentaries. (New York Times review here, photo by Goran Tomasevic/Reuters)

CSI (CBS) — Justin Bieber reprises his role as troubled teen Jason McCann, which raises the question, “How loud of a fart sound can I make?”

Community (NBC) — Chevy Chase’s Pierce, who’s served as a villain for much of Season 2, gains some redemption in tonight’s episode, which is shot in the mockumentary style of “The Office,” “Parks and Rec,” “Modern Family,” etc. Read more about it in Vulture’s interview with the show’s directors.

Man vs. Wild (Discovery) — Season premiere. Come for the carved up-seal carcasses, stay for the comfort and warmth their hides make when you need a wetsuit.

The Office/Parks and Rec (NBC) — Rashida Jones returns to “The Office” as Karen at 9:00, then magically transforms into Anne the nurse for “Parks and Rec” at 9:30. ACTING!

LATE NIGHT GUESTS: Letterman has the most interesting lineup of the night: Paris Hilton, Nathan Fillion, and the Scissor Sisters. That’s a wide-ass spectrum right there. Other guests of note: Hayden Panettierre and JWoww on Lopez; Sarah Chalke on Ferguson; and William H. Macy and Michael Showalter on Fallon.
