Robert Kirkman Offers Clues On The Fate Of Alexandria In ‘The Walking Dead’ Midseason Return

We can already make a fairly accurate assumption that The Walking Dead will kill off numerous characters in its midseason return on Sunday, Feb. 14 in order to make way for a host of new characters, including the series’ version of Breaking Bad‘s Walter White. What we don’t know exactly, however, is whether Alexandria will survive after walkers overrun the community.

Robert Kirkman spoke to that issue with Entertainment Weekly today, initially joking that the cliffhanger in the midseason finale wouldn’t be resolved for another seven episodes before backtracking. “Nah, I’m joking. We pick up right in that moment. Alexandria is overrun. Rick and the kids are all covered in guts trying to get through the crowd. Everyone is where we last saw them, and things get worse from there.”

How bad will it get? Will Alexandria be completely decimated and unusable? A new promo image from The Walking Dead Instagram account suggests that Alexandria could fall. “I thought living behind these walls was possible,” Rick Grimes says.

Meanwhile, Morgan seems to have left the location.

But no, according to Robert Kirkman, we should not expect a permanent location change, at least not yet. The survivors aren’t through with Alexandria yet, according to EW:

“It comes back to those plans of rebuilding Alexandria,” says Kirkman. “Assuming some people survive, and it’s a good bet that some do because they’ve already talked in the midseason finale that they’re not planning on leaving Alexandria. It’s a bump in the road, but there’s something special there, and they can turn this into an anchor that they can build upon. They actually have a chance at surviving long term and building a safe place, not going from safety to safety to safety the way they have for the life of the show. This isn’t the prison, and ‘Oh, we gotta move on from here and find another place.’ This is something different. And from there, there will be other things that expand their world in new and terrifying ways.”

In other words, other locations may (and probably will) be added to The Walking Dead. For Rick and the rest of those who survive the zombie attack, however, Alexandria will continue to be home base.

Me? I’m just happy to see Lennie James in a promo, which suggests that Morgan will probably live another day and fulfill a prediction that he and Carol will hook up in the back half of season six.

The Walking Dead returns on Sunday, Feb. 14.
