Somehow this managed to slip under my radar, but did anyone know that Ricky Gervais has been performing sold out shows with his The Office character David Brent’s band, Foregone Conclusion? So apparently that’s a thing that is happening, and he’s got another upcoming tour that starts in May that he wants to film as a Spinal Tap-esque tour documentary.
“It’s just an idea. I want to do a tour, a little tour –- and people think they’re seeing a tour. I film it, but actually it’s Brent who thinks he’s making a Scorsese-type thing of ‘On the Road.’ Of course, behind the scenes, it is so much sadder and more poignant,” Gervais told The Sunday Times. “It’s ‘Spinal Tap’ meets sad Scorsese meets ‘Anvil.’ It’s more of a breakdown of this man who thought he was going to be something else.”
I’m conflicted about this. There was a time when no none was a bigger Ricky Gervais fan than myself, but somewhere between the second and third Golden Globes hosting gigs he seemed to let his ego get the best of himself and kind of went off the rails. But then he managed to pull it back together with the surprisingly fantastic Derek, (given all the crappy press it got) which was both funny and heartbreaking and at one point made me cry ugly tears.
So, I don’t know. On one hand this has kind of got vanity project stink on it but on the other hand, clearly there’s a demand since his live shows are selling out in under fifteen seconds. (!!!!!) It has the potential to be amazing if done the right way, so for now I guess we’ll just have to give him the benefit of the doubt. If it comes to fruition, Gervais plans on approaching Netflix, HBO or the BBC as he’s done with past projects.
