A Professional Sushi Chef Samples Cheap Sushi From 7-Eleven, Walgreens, And Others

What sushi lover has not been in this situation at some point in time? You’re out running errands or doing some grocery shopping, and you spot cheap, pre-made, packaged sushi. You purchase it with the hopes that maybe it won’t be too gross? But alas, it’s almost always disgusting.

As a public service, BuzzFeed enlisted the help of a professional sushi chef, Yoya Takahashi of Hamasaku in Los Angeles, to rate cheap sushi so, if you have to eat it, at least you know what you’re getting into. Of the five different varieties he taste-tested, Trader Joe’s came in the lowest with “minus zero star,” while a chain called SushiStop (which can sadly only be found in Los Angeles) pulled in three stars. As Takahashi says, though, in any event, your best bet is to just suck it up and go to an actual sushi restaurant… unless you’re also a fan of diarrhea.*
