Comics of Note, February 5th

There are some great comics on the stands this week. Here are reviews of the latest from DC, Marvel, Image, IDW, Dynamite, Valiant, and Avatar.

<!–pagetitle:Joker’s Daughter #1–>

Marguerite Bennett and Meghan Hetrick deliver another one-shot for a character that DC seems bound and determined to believe we really like. Unfortunately, there doesn’t really feel like there’s anything here; there’s nothing particularly compelling about the character, as much as Bennett struggles to find something. Hetrick’s art is well-rendered, but in the end, it feels more like DC wants Joker’s Daughter to be popular, instead of having stumbled across a new take on a character. Maybe they think they can get Amanda Palmer to play her in the movie?

<!–pagetitle:Loki: Agent of Asgard #1–>

Al Ewing and Lee Garbett get into the noggin of the God of Evil, newly reborn as Nightwing and looking to improve his reputation, deleting one crime at a time from his past. Ewing knows his Avengers, and he knows his light comedy, and the result is a romp of an issue as Loki breaks into the Avengers Tower, starts a fight, and, oh yeah, saves the day.

There’s one small problem with that, though…which you’ll have to see at the end of the book. Either way, highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Ms. Marvel #1–>

G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Aphona reboot Ms. Marvel as a Pakistani-American teenager, a move we are absolutely sure you have never heard about until this moment. OK, so the comic has been the subject of a lot of hype, but the truth is, it’s really, really good. Kamala Khan is a sharply drawn character, and the book, while it touches on serious cultural problems, is ultimately about how Kamala views those problems and how they affect her, which is how it should be; this book has a lot to say, but doesn’t do it with lectures.

Aphona’s art is expressive and lighthearted, and really gives the book a fun tone. In short, it’s a great launch to what promises to be an interesting book. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:The Punisher #1–>

Yep, the Punisher is back, and he’s got Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads documenting his kills this time. It’s a fairly straightforward book aimed squarely at Punisher fans, although Edmondson promises to make this particular go-round with Frank a pretty entertaining and gritty enterprise. The best work in the book, though, is from Gerads, who perfectly captures the look and tone a book like this should have. If you’re a Punisher fan, you won’t be disappointed.

<!–pagetitle:Wolverine #1–>

Wolverine is back… without a healing factor, and with a new artist! Paul Cornell and Ryan Stegman take on Wolverine after he loses his healing factor, seemingly for good. We all know that’s not going to stay the case, but it’s changed Logan and… well… better to read the issue to see just how, but safe to say, it’s not for the better.

<!–pagetitle:Lobster Johnson: Get The Lobster #1–>

Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, and Tonci Zonjic deliver a new story of the pulp hero that never was. Zonjic makes some interesting choices in the art, drawing from classic Hollywood. It can be distracting, at moments, but he also grounds the art effectively so that the pulpy bits feel more realistic and engaging. Also, it’s a book with a giant strongman and a midget going on a rampage; come on, it practically sells itself.

<!–pagetitle:Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #1–>

Greg Pak and Mirko Colak reboot the famous, arguably infamous, dinosaur fighting Turok. Pak doesn’t screw around, either; this picks up in the place you’d least expect, and ends where you won’t expect it. Not ground-breaking perhaps but an interesting launch to a somewhat cheesy idea.

<!–pagetitle:The Adventures of Apocalypse Al #1–>

J. Michael Stracyznski and Sid Kotian relate the adventures of a hot demon-fighting P.I. It feels oddly, in tone and style, like a book from the ’90s. The relentless one-liners and various jokes feel a bit forced, and there’s not really a lot done with the concept in this first issue. Kotian’s a capable artist but he’s not really asked to do much, either. In all, not a bad book, but a bit of a disappointment.

<!–pagetitle:Archer And Armstrong #0–>

We learn, finally, the origin of Obadiah Archer in this issue… and it turns out Archer’s got some excellent reason to be angry with just about everyone in the Valiant universe. Fred Van Lente and Pere Perez drop the comedy to tell a rather sad story about a little boy who had everything taken from him, too many times. And this also kicks off a crossover between Archer and Armstrong and Bloodshot and the H.A.R.D. Corps, so it’s a good point to get on board this book.

<!–pagetitle:Bad Blood #2–>

Jonathan Maberry and Tyler Crook continue their story of a young man dying from cancer trying to hunt down the vampire that killed his friends. Honestly, this issue has good and bad parts; it gets a little preachy about how members of BDSM subcultures are not psychos, which is absolutely true, but half the issue is eaten up with it, and it doesn’t help that our hero has a point when he calls out the people he’s seeing as self-righteous and pretentious.

On the other hand, it also has an absolutely killer ending that makes us want to read the next issue, so that makes up for a lot. Recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Baltimore: Chapel of Bones #2–>

Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola’s work is a pleasure to read, as always, but, also as always with the Baltimore series, it’s Ben Stenbeck’s gorgeous, Gothic artwork that makes the book what it is. If you’re a fan of the character, or just like moody, beautiful artwork, this is one to pick up.

<!–pagetitle:Juice Squeezers #2–>

David Lapham’s adorable and goofy children’s book about a squad of kids fighting giant bugs is, well, it’s great. If you’ve got a kid who reads comics somewhere in your life, this is close to perfect. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Gateway #2–>

This story of Purgatory continues. If there’s a problem with this book, it’s just that it doesn’t feel very much like its concept. The idea is fascinating, but the plot needs to start delivering more on it. Not bad, but it could definitely use some work in the next few issues.

<!–pagetitle:Red Rover Charlie #3–>

Leaving aside a bit that’s fairly “classic” Ennis, and you’ll know it when you see it, this series from Garth Ennis and Michael Dipascale continues to be a smart riff on a stale idea. The ending panels, with Charlie, are actually fairy heart-breaking, which is an achievement in a book like this. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Bloodhound: Crowbar Medicine #4–>

Dan Jolley, Leonard Kirk, and Robin Riggs continue this smart, gritty miniseries. Most of this is taken up with explaining why, even with superpowers, you don’t mess with Clevenger, which makes it a fun, fast-paced read. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:The Fox #4–>

Dean Haspiel’s heartfelt and funny superhero book rolls right along, finishing its main story and tying it to the backup arc featuring the Shield. Both, however, are some great superhero comics, and highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Forever Evil #5–>

This is a fun read, because when is villains fighting villains ever not fun? Still, it feels a bit padded at this point; we’re five issues in and we’ve barely gotten to the fight we actually want to see. Still, worth reading.

<!–pagetitle:Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight #5–>

Alex DeCampi and Federica Manfredi continue their grindhouse movie genre mashup, this time with a tribute to the rape/revenge subgenre of slasher movies that’s actually a bit more literary than you think; the medieval setting pays tribute to movies like The Virgin Spring and the folklore that inspired them. Manfredi’s art is solid, and the idea and script is following on the trend of this book having interesting ideas instead of just leaning on camp.

That said, this book has a rape scene that hits a few of the more unfortunate notes of these kinds of movies, and I’m uncertain if it was included to reinforce the point, or just because every movie like this has a rape scene that’s over-the-top and overlong. So, if you pick this up, fair warning.

<!–pagetitle:The Occultist #5–>

Tim Seeley and Mike Norton finish off their superhero miniseries with a delightfully nasty little twist. It’s nothing earthshaking, but it’s a fun read, and it hints at a massive Dark Horse hero team-up that we can’t wait to see.

<!–pagetitle:The Star Wars #5–>

Dark Horse’s weird, wild visit to George Lucas’ original first draft continues. Jonathan Rinzler and Mike Mayhew deliver a really fun issue as our alternate universe Star Wars heroes blast their way out of a spaceport. Also, Lucas really, really can’t write love scenes. It’s always an odd read, but, as always, highly recommended.

Dark Horse’s Howard anthologies are always a good read, although one has to admit the goofy Breckenridge Elkins Western comedy story, which is basically Lil’ Abner, is something of an odd fit between Black Agnes and Brak Mak Morn. But, hey, it is from Howard’s imagination. Either way, you can’t miss with a Dark Horse anthology, and this is no exception.

Joe Casey’s anthology book zooms in on its themes of politics and self-enlightenment, and it’s an interesting, if wordly, read. Worth picking up, if you’ve been following the series.

<!–pagetitle:The Victories #9–>

Michael Avon Oeming’s story of apocalypse and superheroes builds to a pretty big conclusion. It’s a fun, if grim, read, and we’ll be interested to see where it goes next. Still, if you’re not reading, you might want to pick up a trade or wait for the next arc.

The all-female X-Men title launches a new arc, and, honestly, it’s fun team-heroics, but it’s nothing special, either. Worth it for fans of the X-Men or those following the book, but there are better Marvel titles this week.

<!–pagetitle:Shadowman #15–>

Peter Milligan and Roberto De La Torre continue their take on Shadowman with a betrayal and, well, a pretty nasty hard-edged beating. Milligan’s story is a compelling look at rage and darkness, and De La Torre’s scratchy, dark art is ideal for the tone of the story. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Captain America #16–>

Rick Remender and Pascal Alixe start a new arc in Captain America with Arnim Zola’s daughter, Jet Black, faced with a world she doesn’t understand, and torn deeply between Cap’s heroism and her father’s legacy. And she might not be as stable as she looks. It’s a pretty compelling start to a new arc, and worth reading for fans of Cap.

<!–pagetitle:Batman: Detective Comics #28–>

John Layman and Aaron Lopresti have a lot of fun with the Gothopia plotline. It’s worth reading not least because of Layman’s glee with Batman’s thought process; it’s like reading a Parker novel with Batman as the star. One of the better Batbooks on the stands right now, and worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:Red Lanterns/Green Lantern #28–>

Sold in a special flipbook issue, this actually is fairly interesting. Supergirl is now a Red Lantern and… well, yeah, that’s not going to end very well. Definitely worth a read, especially as Red Lanterns just keeps improving under Charles Soule.

The book pays off last month’s reveal with a corker of a followup, but Andrea Sorrentino deserves a call-out here because his arts and layouts are in rare form even for him. Highly recommended.
