Doug Liman May Need Kill

Entertainment Editor

In April we reported that Warner Brothers paid in the low seven figures for Dante Harper’s adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need Is Kill.  The story follows a new recruit in a war against aliens who keeps reliving the day he died in battle, getting better as a fighter and finding hints that could alter the outcome of the war.  So it’s Groundhog Day plus alien battle.  Yes please.

Now Deadline reports Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Jumper) is circling the project (or shaking a camera too much in the project’s general direction).  Part of Harper’s spec script deal requires that shooting has to start relatively soon (possibly by next spring).  Last month Liman signed on to WB’s adaptation of The Three Musketeers.  Paul W. S. Anderson is already directing another Three Musketeers adaptation that will probably beat WB’s to the theater.  If Liman signs onto Kill, WB will probably have to put the kibosh on their Musketeers project.

Wait, a studio may set aside a story in the public domain that’s been done dozens of times to make a big-budget adaptation of something that hasn’t been filmed before?  Is today opposite day?  I knew I should have worn pants.
