From The Wayback File: Dave Chappelle Killing Them Softly On 'Star Search' At Age 19

Upon regaining consciousness, Ed McMahon realized Dave Chapelle is actually a Vulcan.

Last night we stumbled across three videos of Dave Chappelle performing on Star Search back in 1993. He was only 19 years old at the time and the youngest comedian in the show’s history. He scored a perfect 4 out of 4 from all the judges in his first set, which Ed McMahon considered a reason to point out that Sinbad also got a perfect score on the show. You know, because they’re both . . . comedians.

Even though Chappelle’s bits weren’t as tight as his later work, the fact that he had three different TV-ready sets prepared at age 19 — along with the stage presence to deliver them so casually — is impressive. And you can see his skill for making callbacks already on display in his third appearance.

The first video starts after the break, showing Chappelle scoring a 4 to Kevin Brennan’s 3. You may know Kevin Brennan as the guy who took Sarah Silverman’s virginity and the older brother of Neal Brennan, who co-created Chappelle’s Show with Dave Chappelle. This concludes the only two facts I know about Kevin Brennan.
