Two new trailers for sci-fi Looper (opening September 28th) are out now. When we posted the first trailer for Looper two months ago, I attempted to explain the nonsensical plot. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (wearing facial prosthetics) plays the younger version of Bruce Willis. Time travel has been invented and is outlawed. Organized crime uses it to send their targets thirty years into the past, where “loopers” like Gordon-Levitt kill them and dispose of the body. Because risking the end of all things via a paradox is a better option than, say, killing someone in the present time and zapping their corpse to the Triassic period. Also, why would anybody shoot at the future version of himself, for any reason?
That silliness aside, we’re trying to give the benefit of the doubt to writer/director Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom). At least it’s not a remake, and the cinematography should be great. Regarding the two newest trailers, Johnson posted a warning on Twitter: “If you’re already set on seeing Looper, I’d avoid any trailers from here on out. They don’t ruin the movie, but they tip a few little things.”
The first Looper trailer below is the international one, and the second is for the American market. The international trailer actually explains some of the plot so that the idea of the young hitman trying to kill himself doesn’t seem quite as nonsensical (It still doesn’t make sense). The US trailer forgoes explanation to give us more dubstep (ugh) and bad expository dialogue (“This isn’t good.” and “Hunt them down. Every second that passes is bad.”) instead. We Americans just love dubstep and simplistic exposition, I guess? Wub wub wub wub wub *twirls glowsticks*
