Not a lot of rappers make hit singles. Even less see longevity. The few that happen to fall into both categories are hip-hop hall-of-famers. Mr. Chief’s latest release, Assuming Power, does not feature many hit singles. It does, however, showcase enough across-the-board substance to safely assume the relatively young Redford, MI rapper has the potential to see his career out as long as his beaten heart desires. He may never become the high-profile MC his bars may predict, but as long as Chief keeps bringing his blue-collar bars and patented hard-nosed flow, the already strong fan-base he’s groomed over the past eight solo releases will see his consistency out until the last line.
Most people would tell you it’s bad to assume anything. But, when it comes to ‘power,’ the term is completely relative to your situation. If Chief’s case, assumptions are easily made when power is perceived as independence.
