For the Washington Wizards’ newest lottery pick, Otto Porter, Jr., his impromptu generosity occurred far from a layup line at the Verizon Center. Michael Stein witnessed the event and says the powerful moment went largely unnoticed.
The past week and half has been stressful in D.C for reasons easily understandable just by watching the evening news. Stepping out to get a bite to eat, Stein passed a homeless man outside a sandwich shop inquiring if anyone could “spare a sandwich.” Then this happened:
After about 25 minutes, Otto Porter Jr., the Georgetown basketball star and the Washington Wizards’ newest first-round draft pick, drove up, hopped out of his car and entered the shop. Mr. Porter soon exited with his sandwich and drink — but also with a sandwich, a bag of chips and a drink for the homeless man. Mr. Porter then sat down next to the man, and they both enjoyed their sandwiches while making small talk.
Maybe Otto had epiphany to put everything in perspective and realize a strained hip flexor isn’t the worst hand of cards a person could be dealt. Whatever his thinking was leading up to copping a meal for two, kudos to Otto for the random act of kindness. What a person does when eyes aren’t on them determine to true wealth of their character.
